Who is Sameer Rizvi? CSK buy him for Rs 8.40 crore at IPL Auction 2024

Uncapped batsman Sameer Rizvi emerged as one of the highest-priced players in the IPL 2024 auction held on Tuesday, December 19. Hailing from Uttar Pradesh and playing as a middle-order batsman, Rizvi was secured by Chennai Super Kings for a staggering Rs 8.40 crore in the Dubai auction.

Recognized in domestic cricket for his aggressive approach at the crease, Rizvi shared his excitement exclusively with India Today after being chosen by Chennai Super Kings from the talent auction pool.

An exuberant Sameer expressed the ineffability of his emotions, stating, "This feeling is surreal. It's challenging to put it into words. I'm speechless at this moment, taking time to absorb it. Eagerly anticipating playing for CSK."

In the backdrop, phones buzzed with activity, and understandably so, as the Uttar Pradesh batsman became the priciest uncapped player in the IPL 2024 auction—at least as of the current update.

During the IPL mock auction on Jio Cinema, former Indian cricketer Abhinav Mukund shared insights, revealing that an IPL scout had likened Rizvi to a right-handed Suresh Raina in terms of his ability to handle spin and predicted significant interest from various teams.

Former fast bowler RP Singh had earlier suggested that Rizvi could be an ideal addition to the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2024, filling the role of a finisher, which they lacked. While LSG boasted strength in the top order, additional support in the lower order was deemed necessary. Aakash Chopra concurred with Singh, emphasizing Rizvi's proficiency in hitting sixes at will.

Rizvi's cricketing achievements include scoring the fastest century in the inaugural UP T20 League. The young batsman boasts an impressive average of 49.16 in domestic T20s, accompanied by a strike rate of 134.70.

Commenting on Rizvi's playing style, Raina remarked, "Sameer Rizvi exhibits a unique intent in his batting. Representing a UP team would undoubtedly boost his confidence. He shares similarities with Badoni but plays with a more direct bat."
