Apple is officially dropping iPhone web apps features in the EU

Apple has officially ceased support for progressive web apps (PWAs) for iPhone users in the European Union, citing compliance challenges with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Apple claims that implementing compliance with the DMA for homescreen web apps would require an "entirely new integration architecture," which is deemed impractical.

The change means that websites added to the homescreen now act as bookmarks, opening in a new tab rather than functioning as standalone services with features like notifications and badges.

Apple argues that PWAs on iOS are built directly on WebKit, aligning with the security and privacy model for native apps. With the removal of support, Apple cites potential security risks in the EU, including the possibility of malicious web apps reading data from others and accessing a user's camera, microphone, or location without consent.

The change is expected to affect a small number of users, and Apple mentions the "very low user adoption" of homescreen apps as a contributing factor to the decision.
