October is the month of celebration for Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day. In fact, both holidays actually fall on the same day and are basically related to each other. Here's what you need to know about Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day, as well as what is open and closed on the holidays:

When is Columbus Day 2023?

Columbus Day is Monday, Oct. 9.

When is Indigenous Peoples' Day 2023?

Indigenous Peoples' Day is also Monday, Oct. 9.

What is Indigenous Peoples' Day?

According to History.com, there are some 29 states that do not celebrate Columbus Day and have renamed it or replaced it with Indigenous Peoples' Day. While the U.S. government recognizes Indigenous Peoples' Day, it is not yet a federal holiday.

Are federal and local government offices open Columbus Day?

All federal and state offices will be closed from legislature to the courthouse on Monday, Oct. 9. Unlike the state level, Peoria County government offices and the city will be open on Columbus Day.
