Carl Weathers, Who Played Apollo Creed in ‘Rocky’ Movies, Dies at 76

Carl Weathers, once a formidable linebacker for the Oakland Raiders, transitioned from delivering bone-crushing hits on the football field to landing knockout punches on the silver screen as Apollo Creed, the formidable adversary of Sylvester Stallone's endearing prizefighter in "Rocky." 

His impact extended beyond the boxing ring, contributing significantly to one of Hollywood's most triumphant cinematic franchises. On Thursday, at the age of 76, he passed away peacefully in his sleep, as confirmed by his family, who did not disclose the location or cause of his death.

Mr. Weathers boasted a diverse and extensive acting career, accumulating around 80 film and television credits. In t he 2000s, he showcased his versatility by humorously portraying himself as an acting coach on the sitcom "Arrested Development." 

More recently, he lent his voice to Combat Carl in the animated film "Toy Story 4" and portrayed Greef Karga in the "Star Wars" series "The Mandalorian," earning an Emmy Award nomination in 2021 for outstanding guest actor in a drama series.

In the 1996 Adam Sandler comedy "Happy Gilmore," Carl Weathers delivered laughs in his role as Chubbs, a former professional golf star who lost his hand in an alligator attack.
