How to enable Stolen Device Protection on iPhone 2024

Apple has introduced a new feature called Stolen Device Protection for iPhones, providing enhanced security against unauthorized access or alterations to sensitive settings. This feature restricts certain settings when your iPhone is not in a recognized location, requiring Face ID or Touch ID for modifications. Additionally, it introduces a one-hour delay for attempts to change sensitive information.

The Stolen Device Protection feature was introduced earlier this week with the release of iOS 17.3. It is not activated by default, so users must enable it manually to safeguard their iPhones and the associated data. To guide you through the process, here's a step-by-step tutorial on how to enable Stolen Device Protection on your iPhone.

Firstly, ensure that your iPhone is updated to iOS 17.3. Note that Stolen Device Protection is compatible only with iPhone XR and later models, as well as iPhone SE (2nd generation) and SE (3rd generation).

  1. Open Settings and navigate to Face ID & Passcode.
  2. Enter your iPhone's passcode.
  3. Tap "Turn on Protection" under the Stolen Device Protection section.

Once Stolen Device Protection is activated, certain actions on your phone in unfamiliar locations require identity confirmation through Face ID or Touch ID. These actions include using stored passwords or payment methods, disabling Lost Mode, erasing content, applying for an Apple Card, and more.

Moreover, a security delay mandates a facial or fingerprint scan when attempting to change your Apple ID password, update account security settings, modify Face ID or Touch ID settings, change your passcode, reset settings, deactivate Find My, or turn off Stolen Device Protection while in an unfamiliar location.

Stolen Device Protection operates effectively when you are away from recognized locations. It is recommended to set up your home location before enabling this feature to avoid a one-hour delay in changing settings, even when you are at home or work. To establish your home location, navigate to Maps, tap the Home and Work icon, and add the addresses. Additional locations can be included by tapping the 'Plus' icon.
