Google Maps will now show users turns and live ETA directly on lockscreen
The introduction of "Glanceable directions" in Google Maps marks a significant enhancement to the navigation experience, allowing users to stay informed about their route and directions without constantly unlocking their phone.

This feature, slowly rolling out globally, provides real-time updates, estimated arrival time (ETA), and the next turn directly on the lock screen or the route overview screen.

To enable the Glanceable directions feature in Google Maps, users can follow these steps
  • Open the Google Maps app.
  • Tap on your profile icon located in the top right corner.
  • Select "Settings."
  • Scroll down to "Navigation settings."
  • Look for and toggle on "Glanceable directions while navigating."
Additionally, Google Maps is undergoing an AI-driven transformation, introducing several new features to offer users a more immersive experience.

Immersive View

This feature allows users to explore their routes in more detail, providing visual turn-by-turn directions and a multidimensional view. The time slider helps in planning departures based on simulated traffic and weather conditions.

Lens in Maps

Formerly known as "Search with Live View," Lens in Maps combines AI and AR to provide context about surroundings. By tapping the Lens icon in the search bar and lifting the phone, users can discover nearby ATMs, transit stations, restaurants, and more.

Navigation Enhancements

Google Maps' navigation is updating to mirror the real world more accurately, with enhanced colours, realistic building representations, and updated lane details to assist with complex driving manoeuvres.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Google Maps will show EV drivers real-time information about charging stations, including compatibility with their vehicle, charging speed, and the last usage timestamp. These new features aim to provide users with a richer and more informative navigation experience, leveraging AI and AR technologies to enhance usability and convenience.
