OnePlus 12 vs Samsung Galaxy S24+

OnePlus 12 vs Samsung Galaxy S24+

2024, consider keeping an eye on the recently released OnePlus 12 and Galaxy S24+. Despite lacking the "Pro" designation, these smartphones deliver premium design, top-notch specifications, and the latest software experience. However, there exists a substantial price gap between the two. Let's compare OnePlus's latest flagship with the Samsung Galaxy S24+.

Design: A continuation of their predecessors' legacy

The OnePlus 12 and the Samsung Galaxy S24+ exhibit strikingly different designs, each with subtle yet significant changes compared to their predecessors. Both follow a glass-metal sandwich design, but the OnePlus 12 features a curved display and back panel, while the Galaxy S24+ opts for a more practical flat display and frame, reminiscent of the iPhone 15.

The Galaxy S24+ boasts an IP68 rating for better ingress protection, outperforming the OnePlus 12. Both phones utilize Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for protection, with the OnePlus 12 offering additional features like an alert slider and an IR blaster.

Display: Divergent approaches

The OnePlus 12, with its curved display and slightly larger 6.82-inch screen, contrasts with the Galaxy S24+'s 6.7-inch flat display. Both support LTPO technology for a variable refresh rate (1Hz to 120Hz) and offer QHD+ resolution, making them among the sharpest smartphone displays available.

Preferences may vary, with some considering the OnePlus 12 more premium due to its curved display, while others may prefer the practicality of the Galaxy S24+'s flat display, especially for gaming.

Camera: Flagship-grade photography

Both the OnePlus 12 and the Samsung Galaxy S24+ sport a triple camera setup. The OnePlus 12, featuring Hasselblad branding and a periscope-type zoom lens, presents a unique look, while the Galaxy S24+ focuses on practicality with three individual cameras.

The OnePlus 12 offers a 32 MP selfie camera, while the Galaxy S24+ has a 12 MP shooter. Video capabilities include shooting up to 8K with the primary camera and 4K with the selfie cameras. Real-world camera performance may give the Galaxy S24+ a slight edge over the OnePlus 12 due to software tuning.

Performance: Distinct platforms

The OnePlus 12 relies on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, while the Galaxy S24+ uses the Exynos 2400 SoC (in India). Both, being flagship processors, promise excellent performance and a premium user experience.

While the OnePlus 12 ships with OxygenOS 14, the Galaxy S24+ comes with OneUI 6.1, offering different user interfaces. The OnePlus 12 promises four major OS upgrades, while the Galaxy S24+ boasts an industry-leading seven years of software support.

Galaxy S24+ has an edge over OnePlus 12 in AI

The AI-powered Galaxy S24+ offers various generative-AI packed features, including live call translation, transcription, wallpaper generator, image editing, and "Circle to Search." Some features leverage on-device AI capabilities, while others depend on the cloud. Currently, the OnePlus 12 lacks on-device generative AI capabilities.

Battery: OnePlus leads over Samsung

The OnePlus 12 boasts a larger 5,400 mAh battery, supporting 100W fast charging and 50W fast wireless charging. In contrast, the Galaxy S24+ features a smaller 4,900 mAh battery with support for 45W fast charging and 15W wireless charging.

The combination of a bigger battery and faster charging gives the OnePlus 12 an advantage in terms of both battery life and charging speed.

Verdict: Phones with distinct characteristics

The OnePlus 12 stands out as the best non-foldable phone from the company, offering impressive hardware. On the other hand, the Galaxy S24+, while not the pinnacle of Samsung's offerings, ranks among the best from the South Korean tech giant.

The OnePlus 12 excels in hardware, while the Galaxy S24+ provides an exceptional software experience, thanks to its Galaxy AI features. Choosing between them depends on whether you prioritize cutting-edge hardware (OnePlus 12) or an advanced software experience with generative AI features (Galaxy S24+).
